Reading in small groups is critical to reading development. The key to effective small-group instruction is using Guided Reading strategies. In Guided Reading, small groups of students with similar proficiencies read together. Within this setting, students have opportunities to learn and use problem-solving strategies while reading to construct meaning, figure out unknown words, untangle sentence structure, and learn new concepts. Guided reading books and/or leveled readers are used for guided reading.
